Let’s not beat around the bush, Richard Russell has a ridiculously good ear for music. Under his stewardship, XL Recordings have signed some of the biggest artists of the last twenty years, from Radiohead right through to Adele. Aside from being possibly the world’s greatest A&R man, Richard is also an accomplished producer and artist in his own right.

Last week, under the moniker Everything Is Recorded, he shared his latest EP, Close But Not Quite. Featuring an eclectic cast of supporting artists, it’s further testament to Richard’s skills and versatility behind the production desk. For me, the stand out song from the record is the title track, which features a beautifully fragile vocal from man of the moment, Sampha, plus a gorgeous sample from certified soul legend, Curtis Mayfield. It sounds like a bright, summer’s morning – which sounds like heaven to me.
