The Mahogany Minute is designed for those who haven’t got a huge amount of time on their hands, and artists who have even less. Every artist continues the same lines, and we all get to learn a little bit more about them.
Rae Morris was signed to Atlantic Records at the tender age of 17. She’s been working exceptionally hard for the past 4 years, releasing 3 EP’s and making appearances on both Clean Bandit and Bombay Bicycle Club’s most recent albums. She’s now 21 and this week marks the release of her debut album ‘Unguarded’.
The record is inspired by her youth, growing up in the shadow of Blackpool’s Pleasure Beach. She is inclined towards a dark and brooding style, and she admits that it ‘takes a lot for me to write a major key song’. Her wispy vocals and wild hair have earned her comparisons to Kate Bush, who she claims is a major influence on her music alongside Cat Power and Joni Mitchell.
Hi, my name is… Rachel Anne Morris.
My parents… are called Neil and Lesley Morris.
I was born… in Blackpool, Victoria Hospital to be exact.
Now you can find me… in East London mostly. Or in the Lake District.
It all started when… I uploaded some badly recorded demos to MySpace and BBC Introducing.
Music has… completely encompassed my whole life.
If I’m not in the studio or on stage… I’ll jump on a train up north as quick as possible or go to the cinema.
The music industry… is an interesting place in which I’ve made some amazing friends.
I’ve never been… to South America which makes me sad, but hopefully one day.
I wish… that I’d have not stretched my ears when I was teenage mosher because now I have big ear holes.
One song… that i absolutely couldn’t live without is Sunset by Kate Bush.
If I’ve learnt something in the past three years… it’s that every experience counts for something and leads to another one that may be worthwhile.
This year’s highlight… is yet to happen, but I think it will be the release of my debut album next week.
If you listen to my music for the first time… be sure to engage your gut instinct and just feel it.
