Brisbane, Australia is famed the world over for its vast stretches of golden beaches and its year-round, near perfect weather. Musically, however, it’s fair to say that its profile is considerably lower. Yes, the Bee Gees were ‘discovered’ there, but for the past 30 years there have been very few musicians to emerge from the city and achieve global acclaim.

Brisbanite and multi-instrumentalist Jordan Rakei is about to change that though.

Over the past four years, Jordan has consistently released some of the best soul music anywhere in the world. His talents are well known to both fans and peers alike, with sold-out shows the norm and collaborations with the likes of Disclosure, Tom Misch and FKJ already under his belt. Now living and recording in London, Jordan is gearing up to release his sophomore album a little later this year and last week shared the lead single from the record, Sorceress.

Over rolling drums and woozy synths, Jordan sings about “how the ego can fully control the way you act and perceive life”. It sounds like heavy listening, but in fact Sorceress is one of the smoothest tracks you’re likely to hear this year and is further proof of Jordan Rakei’s position at the forefront of the global soul revival.
